Suzanis, GOBs and European textiles

We've gone through our inventory recently and repriced hundreds of European rug and textile books here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

A Kentucky rug store was told they can't be perpetually going out of business.

Old uses for new suzanis.

Mud Mee

We have just listed an interesting book in Thai on mud mee textiles. Mud mee weaving is a weft ikat technique using a dye resistance on the yarn before weaving. The effect from this is to produce different shades of colors. Threads, when spooled on the weft and woven, create a pattern, which creates the effect of mud mee.

12th International Conference on Oriental Carpets in 2011

Jozan Magazine has asked Dennis Dodds, Secretary-general ICOC, for information on the 12th ICOC.

His Reply:

Following the conclusion of the extraordinary 11th ICOC in Istanbul in April 2007, a meeting of the ICOC International Committee was held to invite suggestions for the host city of the 12th ICOC. Chairman of the International Committee, Professor Walter B. Denny, chaired the meeting and, after discussing possible venues, a vote of the members resulted in pre-selecting Paris and Stockholm as the principal candidates.

A 'Request for Proposal' package was recently sent by Professor Denny to representatives in each city who will submit their respective detailed proposals to the ICOC Executive Committee by April 2008. There are many variables to consider so that ICOC can best serve the interests of our diverse and enthusiastic international community of academics, collectors, dealers and aficionados. After thoroughly reviewing each proposal, another vote will be taken and the final host city will be announced. Jozan readers may visit our website for updates: www.icoc-orientalrugs.org.

Jozan readers may also be pleased to know that they can now order the official Istanbul ICOC exhibition catalogues from Dennis Marquand at www.rugbooks.com. It is a magnificent 2-volume boxed set of hundreds of color plates which chronicles the remarkable carpets in the Turk ve Islam Muzesi exhibition, as well as private collections of previously unpublished kilims, rugs and yastiks.

ICOC is a non-profit organization and is staffed only by unpaid volunteers. We greatly appreciate the support we get from Jozan readers around the world who register for our conferences and purchase our beautiful books.

Maps of Rug Producing Areas

We've added a modest map section to our website. Check it out.

Western guilt influencing modern oriental rugs?

I his blog yesterday Emmett Eiland raised an interesting theory he attributes to James Opie:

...the West is now making amends for past sins (such as introducing very poor quality synthetic dyes to the rug-making East in the nineteenth century) by helping restore some of the rug-making techniques and designs lost to many of the weavers during the past sixty years...

For some reason it reminds me of Oriental rug designs being introduced to Navajo weavers for the commercial trade of their blankets ("Hey, ditch those stripes and put a couple Lesghi stars on there"). Those designs still carry on today. Then again when did these designs not flow from one culture to another introduced by traders or invaders?

Rugs in Fiction

I was visiting my girlfriend's parents in Tehachapi over the holidays and as is my habit stopped at the local used bookstore. Outside in the 50 cent pile I picked up Emma Lathan's By Hook or By Crook, a murder mystery about a family in the rug business which I have just started reading. It got me thinking about rugs and the rug business in fiction. Well-known Oriental rug bibliophile Jerry Silverman penned a couple of entertaining novellas in the 90s: Book-Collecting Ain't for Sissies and G.O.B. of Blood. My personal favorite is The Big Lebowski where what happens to the main character's oriental carpet is the catalyst for his misadventures.

In what other works of fiction are rugs prominently displayed? What are your favorites?
