New Titles Added

We want to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2013.
Next month in San Francisco, concurrent with the annual Caskey-Lees Tribal Arts Show, there will be several dealers informally exhibiting at the Motel Capri, home of the annual October Antique Rug and Textile Show. The Marquands will be represented in some fashion.

In June, author and scholar, Stefano Ionescu will lead another cultural and rug tour to Transylvania to see nearly 300 of the most beautiful Ottoman Turkish rugs in the world, dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries and preserved in the region’s churches and museums. We have been on Stefano’s Transylvanian tour and heartily recommend it.

We are pleased to offer 10 new titles marked with a  as well as 12 books that are now back in stock. You can keep current on our offerings by visiting our New Additions page.

Meller, Susan Russian Textiles: Printed Cloth for the Bazaars of Central Asia  Abrams New York 2007  208 pp 10 x 12 Hardback in dustjacket in Very Good condition  With photography by Don Tuttle. Essays by Kate Fitz Gibbon, Annie Carlano, and Robert Kushner. "Susan Meller is coauthor of Abrams' highly successful publication Textile Designs: Two Hundred Years of European and American Patterns for Printed Fabrics Organized by Motif, Style, Color, Layout, and Period, the definitive source book for textile patterns. Now, in Russian Textiles, another groundbreaking volume, she focuses on her favorite textiles, the gorgeous printed-cotton fabrics created and manufactured in Russia from about 1860 to 1960 specifically for export to Central Asia. Virtually all the textiles in this book are from the author's collection and are being reproduced here for the first time.********** The countries of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan - once known collectively as Russian Turkestan - are areas of strategic importance and vast natural resources; they also represent an extremely rich cultural heritage, much of it centered around the unique textile traditions of the region. The people in these Central Asian countries incorporated the brightly patterned material into their clothing, particularly their robes, as well as their house-hold items. Russian Textiles explores through cloth the political, economic, and cultural ties between Russia and Central Asia, giving the reader both insight into this complex region and an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of its textiles - many of which have been hidden from view inside the robes they lined. One could say that this is indeed the "inside story."**********Russian Textiles showcases more than 190 spectacular patterns spanning a variety of periods and styles, ranging from Art Nouveau florals to Soviet-era agitprop. Essays by the author and fellow textile experts Kate Fitz Gibbon and Annie Carlano descibe the "social life" of the fabrics and the fascinating history of this merging of Russian, Central Asian, and Western aesthetic styles. Robert Kushner contributes a lively text on how an artist "sees" and is inspired by these designs. Complementing the pattern images are vintage photographs from Central Asia at the turn of the twentieth century as well as beautifully detailed reproductions of the robes and other articles that were lined and embellished with these cloths. In all, more than 250 exquisite reproductions are included. Inside this book is a beautiful world waiting to be explored and treasured by artists; fashion, interior, or product designers; crafters; and anyone with a love of extraordinary visual design." -Cover
