New Rug/Textile Books and a $9,500,000 Carpet

We have finally received a copy of the Christie's sale showing for the first time in full color the carpet that has the rug world agog. This "vase" carpet, first published in Pope's Survey of Persian Art brought $9.5 million. We have also acquired a few new titles since the first of the month:

Ames, Frank WOVEN MASTERPIECES OF SIKH HERITAGE: THE STYLISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE KASHMIR SHAWL UNDER MAHARAJA RANJIT SINGH (1780-1839) Antique Collectors' Club Woodbridge 2010 208 Color Plates 18 Black and White 256 pp. 9.5 x 12 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition In this new, ground-breaking work, Woven Masterpieces of Sikh Heritage, Frank Ames' unique passion for the subject reveals the events and ideas that transpired within this Khalsa (Sikh Brotherhood) movement, transforming the Kashmir shawl to one of powerful ethnic proportions. During this era of Punjab's colorful history a variety of complex and enigmatic patterns emerged, some purely geometric, others symbolic, which have long eluded textiles experts. Maharaja Runjit Singh's takeover of Kashmir in 1819 had an extraordinary impact on the fashion of the legendary Kashmir shawl, giving rise to a major artistic expression in the subcontinent". Through the exploration of miniature painting of Northern India and the hill states, Kashmiri manuscripts, the Sikh Holy Scriptures of the Sri Adi Granth and Janam Sakhis, and illustrations of unique shawls from world collections, Ames describes with his usual penchant for exacting detail the nature and source of these enigmatic patterns that define the Sikh period. In addition, textile enthusiasts will discover new material in chapters devoted to the Mughal period, lacquer painting and Indo-Persian shawl influences and trade." -Publisher $90

These are further subdivided into more precise attributions and motif types, examining the derivations and uses of medallions, field repeats and borders and the relationships between them. Pattern recognition has long been used to determine the origin and age of rugs, and this detailed analysis of designs and their component elements provides a vital key to accurate attribution. The hand-embroidered covers presented in this superb new publication are among the most beautiful objects known from the high period of the art of needlework in the former Central Asian Emirates of Bukhara and Kokand, the areas known today as the Republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. They are known as 'suzani', derived from the Farsi word for 'needle'. The oldest examples can be attributed to the eighteenth century - although they may in fact be older - and the tradition continued into the early twentieth century. Each embroidery formed part of a suite made by a bride and her family as dowry gifts. Weddings were significant events in the tribal society of Central Asia, representing the binding together of two people and two families. This important new publication will certainly be invaluable to collectors and connoisseurs of textile art as well as to designers and architects. The publication comprises fourteen large format loose leaf colour plates of selected Large Medallion suzani, with another eight huge life-size colour details, accompanied by a separate bound volume with duotone illustrations of almost all the known examples and a text by Michael Franses that provides a general introduction to suzani and discusses this spectacular and important group of textiles in detail. 1898406359 $300

Ellis, Marianne and Jennifer Wearden OTTOMAN EMBROIDERY V and A Publications / Harry N. Abrams London 2001 145 Color Plates 14 Black and White Diagrams 144 pp. 10 x 12 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition Victoria and Albert Museum publication from the museum collection. Includes sashes, kerchiefs, and scarves. Beautiful embroidery is one of the unique contributions the Ottoman Empire made to world art. London's Victoria & Albert Museum has acquired over 680 pieces of this work. Here, Ellis (Embroideries and Samplers from Islamic Egypt), research assistant at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and Wearden (Samplers from the Victoria & Albert Museum and Persian Printed Cottons), assistant curator in textiles and dress at the Victoria & Albert Museum, pull selected pieces from that collection for this catalog. The Ottoman Empire is very briefly introduced in a chapter covering its history, expansion, culture, and influence, and tucked behind the plates is a wonderful chapter on the actual embroidery techniques, detailed in text and diagrams. The overall organization of the book is, unfortunately, clunky for example, there is no index, and the illustrations and their captions are separated. However, the color illustrations themselves are large and bright, showing the effect of the embroidery pattern or close-up details of the tiny stitches. $30.00

New Books for March 2010, etc.

Mom and Dad had a great time in San Francisco for the Tribal and Textile Art show and enjoyed visiting with many of you. I put a few of the pictures Mom took on our Facebook page which you can see here: http://www.facebook.com/rugbooks.

We also had our yearly visit from the tax man and inspired have decided that in the month of March we will pay the sales tax from California residents.

Stefano Inonescu, author of the seminal Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania reports that he has a few spots open for his May and June tours of Transylvania. My parents went last year. They report good food, good wine and wonderful rugs. There are a few pictures from the tour on our blog here: http://rugbooks.blogspot.com/2009/07/trip-pics.html

Chenciner, Robert et al. KAITAG: DAGHESTANI SILK EMBROIDERY: AN ITALIAN COLLECTION Ziya Bozoglu London 2007 84 Color Plates 184 pp. 9.75 x 12.75 Hardback in New condition A collection of 82 embroideries from Daghestan. "Kaitag art speaks to people of diverse cultural traditions. French art-lovers respond to a proto-Matisse style; in Sweden they see ancient Scandinavian art; Australians are reminded of Aboriginal art and in the US they see Abstract Expressionist paintings. Indeed, all these echoes are references to the common experience of the primal appeal of Kaitag embroideries, which is based on shared animist archetypes. KAITAG is the natural successor to Robert Chenciner’s first publication on the subject more than a dozen years ago, greatly adding to the lively corpus of known styles and designs of Daghestani silk embroideries, among them many pieces that are quite simply ‘best-of-type’." $150.00

Jackson, Beverly and David Hugus LADDER TO THE CLOUDS, INTRIGUE AND TRADITION IN CHINESE RANK Ten Speed Press Berkeley 1999 216 Color Plates 56 Black and White Photos 310 pp. 10 x 10 Paperback in Very Good condition A comprehensive study of Chinese civil and military rank badges. These small Chinese silk squares were sewn on surcoats. With Hugus, a collector who supplies many of the examples here as well as much of the more scholarly text, Jackson, the writer of Splendid Slippers: A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition, tackles another intriguing Chinese social phenomenon: official rank and its insignia as represented in the imperial costume of Ming and Ch'ing dynasties (1368-1912). Each rank was identified by a finely woven or embroidered silk square that was worn on the front and back of a surcoat. The iconography--birds for civil ranks and real and mythological animals for military ranks--indicates not only official status but also the general Chinese worldview. Although the pictures and text are at times somewhat uncoordinated, the beautifully reproduced full-color illustrations of the badges together with archival photographs do provide a multifaceted view of the ancient system. This first comprehensive book on the topic--providing a historical and cultural background as well as information for decoding Chinese symbols on imperial dress--serves as a guide for art, military, and cultural historians as well as collectors. $30.00

"Anyone familiar with the lively Moroccan rug and carpet market will have noticed the emergence in recent years of a previously little known type of ‘rag rug’ (called Boucherouite or Boucherwit, from Moroccan Arabic bu sherwit, ‘a piece torn from pre-used clothing’, ‘scrap’) which marks the (provisional) end of a development in which the traditional materials used for weaving (mainly sheep’s wool) are rapidly being augmented and substituted. This development is an inevitable consequence of widespread economic, social and cultural changes in Morocco’s rural areas: with the move away from nomadic animal husbandry to settled farming and other modern forms of rural employment, wool as the primary raw material for the production of carpets for Moroccan domestic use has become ever rarer, and replacement materials have become ever more important. The materials used include recycled rag strips and yarns from a variety of ‘found’ textile remnants including wool, cotton, synthetic fibres, Lurex, nylon and plastic. This development started during the 1960s and 1970s in the plains – mainly settled by Arabs – around the towns of Beni Mellal and Boujad." $60.00

Tapper, Richard and Jon Thompson ed. THE NOMADIC PEOPLES OF IRAN Azimuth Editions London 2002 324 pp. 12.5 x 9.5 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition This massive book documents the life of the nomads of Persia at the end of the 20th century. Tribes include Kurds, Qashqa'i, Shahsavan and Turkmen. Many rugs and costumes are shown. Photography by Nasrollah Kasraian. "For those of us with an abiding passion for tribal nomadic textiles and the study of their history, ethnography and socio-economic background, this handsome coffee- table book by Tapper and Thompson is the ultimate Christmas gift. It is a labor of love that has consumed years of effort on the part of its editors,(see the introduction by Jon Thompson), but it was certainly worthwhile for it combines sumptuous display with scholarly content. It is literally packed with hundreds of photos by the distinguished Iranian photographer Nasrollah Kasraian as well as a definitive compilation of essays on the tribal peoples of Iran by a dozen of the top anthropologists who have conducted actual fieldwork among the nomads. Thus the volume is a happy conjunction of entertainment, enlightening photographs and scholarly text."-Peter Poullada $100.00

Anostazija Tamosaitiene and Antanas Tamosaitis LITHUANIAN SASHES Lithuanian Folk Art Institute Toronto 1988 Hundreds of Color and Black and White illustrations 316 pp. 8.5 x 11 Hardback in dustjacket in Very Good condition. Deaccessioned from a museum research library with usual markings "Lithuanian Sashes is an academic work complete with bibliography, index and symbol keys for various sash motifs. As part of their documentation for the book, the authors closely examined several thousand ancient thousand were reproduced in the book, for the greater part in the original colour. To date this is the only existing book about sashes in English. In writing the book the authors explored various sources as well as closely studying numerous sashes they had brought with them from Lithuania. Extensive use was made of drawings of sash motifs, photographs, sash motif albums, newspaper articles as well as periodicals specifically devoted to sashes. In ancient Lithuania, a sash constituted a symbolic gift, especially at weddings. The tradition of sash weaving has been preserved to this present day, not only in Lithuania but in all countries where Lithuanian families have established themselves." $60.00

Battini, Chiara with Paola Barbetti, Alberto Boralevi, Alberto Levi, Elena Tzareva FILIKLI: ANATOLIA XX CENTURY: MORESCHINI COLLECTION Angelo Pontecorboli Editore Firenze 2009 55 Color Plates 80 pp. 8.75 x 8.75 Paperback in As New condition The Filikli is an Anatolian long hair rug, extremely soft, usually monochrome and mostly without any pattern. The colour palette is ample but the colour red dominates the scene and it appears in numerous hue variations that, as in a mirror effect, enhance its potential. In fact, the colour red towers over many a form of tribal art. From the scarce literature available the Filikli is almost always numbered among the Anatolian Tulus as one of the possible variations. Furthermore, oftentimes, it is confused with similar weaves such as the Perdes or the Zakatalas. Yet, the group of Filiklis exhibits homogeneous aesthetic and structural elements that belong neither to the Tulus nor to other similar weavings. Thus, we should consider the Filikli an object on its own, give it back the right of citizenship, a personality and a life of its own. These are the stakes. The Florentine Collection of Giuseppe Moreschini’s Filiklis consists of a singular number of high quality pieces in a unique chromatic variety; specimens so pure to embody the essence of the Filikli and others extremely significant to underline the connection between the Filikli and other similar rugs. So, this Collection allows us to identify the objective qualities specific to the Filikli, to outline the criteria for its authenticity, to try and ascertain its anthropological value and, once sheltered from any identity theft, it can help work out the relationship between what a Filikli is and what it is not: Tulu, Perde, Zakatala, etc." -Publisher $75.00
