Chuvals and Ikats and Tuducs, Oh My!

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! The San Francisco Antique Rug and Textile Show was an unqualified success. It had been reported that attendance was down from last year but I saw the opposite. It was a rare moment that someone wasn't poking around our shelves and making piles of books. On the contrary, attendance was good and sales were certainly up. There were many new faces drawn by world-class dealers as well as the "bargain room", appraisal days, and beginners' lectures. It was great to meet many of you in the flesh and I hope to see you next year!

The SF show was held concurrently with San Francisco Tribal's wonderful annual exhibition as well as other exhibitions around the Bay Area including Thomas Cole's Ancient Imprints: Turkmen Textile Art which is ongoing. We are selling Tom's catalog for $30.

Washington D.C. was the other epicenter of the rug world that weekend. We would like to congratulate a couple of Brits, Hali Magazine's Executive Editor Danny Shaffer who was presented with the Joseph V. McMullan Award as well as Michael Franses who took home the George Hewitt Myers Award. Both were given for their decades of contributions to the study of Oriental rugs and both have been and remain instrumental in the publication of Oriental rug literature.

That weekend was also the opening of Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats from the stunning Murad Megalli collection at The Textile Museum. Both a hardback and paperback catalog were produced and you can find them here. We continue to offer free shipping in the United States and are paying the sales tax for California residents.

We are also pleased to note that early registration has been extended for the 12th International Conference on Oriental Carpets in Stockholm to December 1. Register now and save!

Ionescu, Stefano with additional contributions by Alberto Boralevi Handbook of Fakes by Tuduc (World's most famous rug forger) Stefano Ionescu Boston 2010 152 pp. 8.25 x 15.5 Hardback in New condition Limited to 50 copies digitally printed on cotton-weave paper. 76 fakes by Tuduc published in color and in black/white; 20 Anatolian, Caucasian and Persian rugs used as models by Tuduc, published in color; 22 ‘whereabouts unknown’ (Anatolian rugs which were recorded in Transylvania before WWII, and have since disappeared) "Since the mid 20th century the authenticity of certain Anatolian and classical rugs in major museums and private collections has come into question. Some of these rugs had previously been legitimized by having been published as ‘authentic’ in books by carpet scholars. A few of these have now been identified as ‘forgeries’, and have been traced to the workshop of Romanian master weaver, Teodor Tuduc. This book presents a large body of work attributable to the workshop of Theodore Tuduc, and it presents many authentic examples, which served as prototypes for Tuduc forgeries, in museum and private collections. The author has developed and presented a framework for identifying suspect carpets: this involves examination of technical and stylistic characteristics of Tuduc’s workmanship. This methodology is based on the study of the rug literature of the time and on examples of rugs in Transylvania and Hungary. There is now an increased awareness of the issue of authenticity, as the reputation of Tuduc has grown, and as the creation of ‘facsimilies’ is becoming more commonplace. Handbook of Fakes by Tuduc will be of great value to collectors, museum specialists, auctioneers, carpet dealers, and appraisers, in providing information needed for verifying authenticity." -Publisher $120

Nineteenth-century Central Asian ikats are distinguished by bold, original designs using vibrant colors and are prized for their great beauty. Today the influence of ikat textiles can be seen in contemporary fashion and home decor. Colors of the Oasis explores the artistic, social, and economic aspects of Central Asian ikat production and the role these textiles played in the nineteenth-century role and upper-middle-class urban society living in oasis towns of what is now Uzbekistan, while bringing attention to the contemporary revival of ikat production in Uzbekistan and its historic influences. Ikats derive their name from the technique used to create them, wherein parts of the warp or weft are protected in order to resist dye. The process is complex, requiring highly skilled and specialized craftsmen and careful planning before weaving starts. The resulting textiles are recognized for their daring, often large designs, clever color combinations and dazzling palettes. Colors of the Oasis presents 185 never-before-seen ikat textiles from the outstanding collection donated to The Textile Museum since 2005 by Murad Megalli of Istanbul. Includes essays: Abr Fabrics of Uzbekistan - Sayera Makhkamova; The Many Lives of Ikat - Kate Fitz Gibbon; Central Asian Ikats: Origins and Sources of Design - Andrew Hale; Oasis Style - Sumru Belger Krody; The Russian Connection: Printed-cotton Export Cloth - Susan Meller; Binding Clouds in the Twenty-First Century: Central Asian Ikat Today - Mary M. Thompson, Jon; Daniel Shaffer and Pirjetta Mildh, eds. Carpets and Textiles in the Iranian World 1400-1700: Proceedings of the Conference Held at the Ashmolean Museum The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford University, In Association With The Bruschettini Foundation For Islamic And Asian Art, Genoa Oxford / Genoa 2010 222 Color and Black and White 260 pp. 8 x 12 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition Scholarly. "Carpets and Textiles in the Iranian World 1400 - 1700 is a generously illustrated and meticulously produced compilation in revised form of the papers given at the international conference at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford in August 2003, arranged by the May Beattie Carpet Archive and co-sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation, including the work of scholars from several disciplines whose expertise illuminates different aspects of the history of carpets and textiles in the Iranian sphere. In the most significant contribution to academic carpet studies since Oriental Carpet & Textile Studies II (1986), Dr. Jon Thompson, Prof. Walter Denny and Christine Klose address certain important theoretical questions relating to carpets in the 15th century and later. Their subject matter overlaps to some extent, although all three adopt rather different points of view. A fourth paper, by Jessica Hallett, devoted to Safavid carpets, refers to original documents to survey the fashion in Portugal for `oriental' carpets during the 16th and 17th centuries, a notable gap in our knowledge, while a fifth, by Julia Bailey, addresses the use of `Kufic' design elements in Persian carpets and their representation in miniature paintings. Wider academic interest in textile themes is reflected in papers on the pan-Asian art historical background by Yolande Crowe, on Persian costume by Jennifer Scarce and the late Patricia Baker, on Safavid textiles by Mary McWilliams and Beata Biedronska Slota, on the use of fine goat hair in early Persian and Indian carpets and textiles by Steven Cohen, and on the Indian Ocean and international textile trade by Willem Floor and René Bekius. The book stands as a fitting tribute to the life and pioneering scholarship of May H. Beattie." -Publisher $150
