Felton, Anton JEWISH CARPETS, A HISTORY AND GUIDE Antique Collectors' Club Woodbridge 1997 100 Color Plates 20 Black and White 200 pp. 8.5 x 11 Hardback in dustjacket in Very Good condition The first book ever written on Jewish carpets. One hundred individual carpets, dating from the 14th century to the present, woven in Israel, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Bulgaria and The Ukraine are illustrated and accompanied by vigorous and informative commentaries. Their place, their time, their wool, their knots, may all vary, but the unity of their symbols and of their inscriptions give them a compelling and cohesive identity. The meanings and messages of the symbols and the impact of the prohibition against graven images are assessed, as are the artistic, aesthetic and technical elements of the carpets. It surveys the religious carpets hanging in the synagogue, as protection for the Ark, and in the home, as pointers to Jerusalem. It examines the early Zionist carpets, which crafted a new post-Ghetto Jewish identity, directing people towards the Bible lands and creating skills and work there. It reviews some wonderfully fine Islamic carpets signed by Jews and uncovers ORT carpets which interweave Judaic symbols with Socialist Realism. This is the first book to describe the numerous religious and domestic purposes of Jewish rugs and to trace their history across the centuries. The style, date and provenance of the rugs may vary but they still retain a cohesive identity through the unity of their symbols and inscriptions. Their meanings and messages and the impact of the prohibition against graven images are assessed, as are the artistic, aesthetic and technical elements. $100

Chuvals and Ikats and Tuducs, Oh My!

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! The San Francisco Antique Rug and Textile Show was an unqualified success. It had been reported that attendance was down from last year but I saw the opposite. It was a rare moment that someone wasn't poking around our shelves and making piles of books. On the contrary, attendance was good and sales were certainly up. There were many new faces drawn by world-class dealers as well as the "bargain room", appraisal days, and beginners' lectures. It was great to meet many of you in the flesh and I hope to see you next year!

The SF show was held concurrently with San Francisco Tribal's wonderful annual exhibition as well as other exhibitions around the Bay Area including Thomas Cole's Ancient Imprints: Turkmen Textile Art which is ongoing. We are selling Tom's catalog for $30.

Washington D.C. was the other epicenter of the rug world that weekend. We would like to congratulate a couple of Brits, Hali Magazine's Executive Editor Danny Shaffer who was presented with the Joseph V. McMullan Award as well as Michael Franses who took home the George Hewitt Myers Award. Both were given for their decades of contributions to the study of Oriental rugs and both have been and remain instrumental in the publication of Oriental rug literature.

That weekend was also the opening of Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats from the stunning Murad Megalli collection at The Textile Museum. Both a hardback and paperback catalog were produced and you can find them here. We continue to offer free shipping in the United States and are paying the sales tax for California residents.

We are also pleased to note that early registration has been extended for the 12th International Conference on Oriental Carpets in Stockholm to December 1. Register now and save!

Ionescu, Stefano with additional contributions by Alberto Boralevi Handbook of Fakes by Tuduc (World's most famous rug forger) Stefano Ionescu Boston 2010 152 pp. 8.25 x 15.5 Hardback in New condition Limited to 50 copies digitally printed on cotton-weave paper. 76 fakes by Tuduc published in color and in black/white; 20 Anatolian, Caucasian and Persian rugs used as models by Tuduc, published in color; 22 ‘whereabouts unknown’ (Anatolian rugs which were recorded in Transylvania before WWII, and have since disappeared) "Since the mid 20th century the authenticity of certain Anatolian and classical rugs in major museums and private collections has come into question. Some of these rugs had previously been legitimized by having been published as ‘authentic’ in books by carpet scholars. A few of these have now been identified as ‘forgeries’, and have been traced to the workshop of Romanian master weaver, Teodor Tuduc. This book presents a large body of work attributable to the workshop of Theodore Tuduc, and it presents many authentic examples, which served as prototypes for Tuduc forgeries, in museum and private collections. The author has developed and presented a framework for identifying suspect carpets: this involves examination of technical and stylistic characteristics of Tuduc’s workmanship. This methodology is based on the study of the rug literature of the time and on examples of rugs in Transylvania and Hungary. There is now an increased awareness of the issue of authenticity, as the reputation of Tuduc has grown, and as the creation of ‘facsimilies’ is becoming more commonplace. Handbook of Fakes by Tuduc will be of great value to collectors, museum specialists, auctioneers, carpet dealers, and appraisers, in providing information needed for verifying authenticity." -Publisher $120

Nineteenth-century Central Asian ikats are distinguished by bold, original designs using vibrant colors and are prized for their great beauty. Today the influence of ikat textiles can be seen in contemporary fashion and home decor. Colors of the Oasis explores the artistic, social, and economic aspects of Central Asian ikat production and the role these textiles played in the nineteenth-century role and upper-middle-class urban society living in oasis towns of what is now Uzbekistan, while bringing attention to the contemporary revival of ikat production in Uzbekistan and its historic influences. Ikats derive their name from the technique used to create them, wherein parts of the warp or weft are protected in order to resist dye. The process is complex, requiring highly skilled and specialized craftsmen and careful planning before weaving starts. The resulting textiles are recognized for their daring, often large designs, clever color combinations and dazzling palettes. Colors of the Oasis presents 185 never-before-seen ikat textiles from the outstanding collection donated to The Textile Museum since 2005 by Murad Megalli of Istanbul. Includes essays: Abr Fabrics of Uzbekistan - Sayera Makhkamova; The Many Lives of Ikat - Kate Fitz Gibbon; Central Asian Ikats: Origins and Sources of Design - Andrew Hale; Oasis Style - Sumru Belger Krody; The Russian Connection: Printed-cotton Export Cloth - Susan Meller; Binding Clouds in the Twenty-First Century: Central Asian Ikat Today - Mary M. Thompson, Jon; Daniel Shaffer and Pirjetta Mildh, eds. Carpets and Textiles in the Iranian World 1400-1700: Proceedings of the Conference Held at the Ashmolean Museum The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford University, In Association With The Bruschettini Foundation For Islamic And Asian Art, Genoa Oxford / Genoa 2010 222 Color and Black and White 260 pp. 8 x 12 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition Scholarly. "Carpets and Textiles in the Iranian World 1400 - 1700 is a generously illustrated and meticulously produced compilation in revised form of the papers given at the international conference at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford in August 2003, arranged by the May Beattie Carpet Archive and co-sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation, including the work of scholars from several disciplines whose expertise illuminates different aspects of the history of carpets and textiles in the Iranian sphere. In the most significant contribution to academic carpet studies since Oriental Carpet & Textile Studies II (1986), Dr. Jon Thompson, Prof. Walter Denny and Christine Klose address certain important theoretical questions relating to carpets in the 15th century and later. Their subject matter overlaps to some extent, although all three adopt rather different points of view. A fourth paper, by Jessica Hallett, devoted to Safavid carpets, refers to original documents to survey the fashion in Portugal for `oriental' carpets during the 16th and 17th centuries, a notable gap in our knowledge, while a fifth, by Julia Bailey, addresses the use of `Kufic' design elements in Persian carpets and their representation in miniature paintings. Wider academic interest in textile themes is reflected in papers on the pan-Asian art historical background by Yolande Crowe, on Persian costume by Jennifer Scarce and the late Patricia Baker, on Safavid textiles by Mary McWilliams and Beata Biedronska Slota, on the use of fine goat hair in early Persian and Indian carpets and textiles by Steven Cohen, and on the Indian Ocean and international textile trade by Willem Floor and René Bekius. The book stands as a fitting tribute to the life and pioneering scholarship of May H. Beattie." -Publisher $150

Franses, Michael The Great Embroideries of Bukhara Textile and Art Publications London 2000 48 Color Plates 70 Black and White 18 x 14 Boxed Album in As New condition Large format custom made box of loose leaf color plates plus life-sized details and a softbound 104 page catalog raisonne. Massive and beautiful. The hand-embroidered covers presented in this superb new publication are among the most beautiful objects known from the high period of the art of needlework in the former Central Asian Emirates of Bukhara and Kokand, the areas known today as the Republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. They are known as 'suzani', derived from the Farsi word for 'needle'. The oldest examples can be attributed to the eighteenth century - although they may in fact be older - and the tradition continued into the early twentieth century. Each embroidery formed part of a suite made by a bride and her family as dowry gifts. Weddings were significant events in the tribal society of Central Asia, representing the binding together of two people and two families. Franses, Michael and Hans Koenig Glanz der Himmelssoehne, Kaiserliche Teppiche aus China 1400-1750 (Splendour of the Sons of Heaven, Imperial Chinese Carpets) Textile and Art Publications, Ltd. London 2005 Over 245 Color Plates 228 pp. 9.5 x 14 Hardback in dustjacket in New condition German language text, with essay on structure analysis in English. Chinese carpets from the 'classical' period, 1400 to 1750, possess a serenity and balance that are quite unsurpassed. These attributes did not come about purely by chance, but rather through centuries of tradition and refinement. In order to create these beautiful objects, the Chinese master weavers used highly elaborate methods of weaving incorporating a huge repertoire of knotting techniques, far more than in any other carpet- making region. The range of colors and the use of varying shades of each color were the result of more than two thousand years of usage and development of natural dyestuffs. Probably fewer than six hundred Chinese carpets survive today from the classical period. The Palace Museum in Beijing has the largest collection, with fewer than one hundred; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has some fifteen rugs and a similar number survive in The Textile Museum, Washington, D.C. A few other museums possess just one or two examples, often gifts they received by chance. The main body of examples is held in private collections in Europe and the United States of America. They have survived through the foresight, care and connoisseurship of their owners. Due to their scarcity, classical Chinese carpets have remained virtually unknown. Their beauty is admired superficially, but their meanings and tradition remain a mystery. It is hoped that through projects such as this, a light can be kindled that encourages others to research the subject more deeply. $200

Kent, Kate Peck Prehistoric Textiles of the Southwest University of New Mexico Press Santa Fe 1983 18 Color Plates 161 Black and White 315 pp. 8 x 10 Hardback in dustjacket in Very Good condition. Dustjacket has a few tiny tears. Slight foxing to head and fore-edge. In this definitive study of prehistoric textiles, Kate Peck Kent traces the history of weaving in the Southwest long before the Spanish conquest. She has recorded and examined thousands of woven articles-archaeological finds-all the evidence available to her in museum collections and published reports. Her research will interest many more than those who think of southwestern weaving as synonymous with Navajo weaving. The author illustrates the antecedents of Navajo weaving as she follows the course of the indigenous tradition back through the arts of the early Pueblo Indians, the Basketmakers, and the Mogollon peoples. We are led through the 'Gran Chichimeca' to the roots of southwestern weaving in the textile arts of the high cultures or Mexico, Central America, and Peru -Cover $120

The oldest examples can be attributed to the eighteenth century - although they may in fact be older - and the tradition continued into the early twentieth century. Each embroidery formed part of a suite made by a bride and her family as dowry gifts. Along with 40 other dealers in antique Oriental rug and textile art we will again be exhibiting at the 2nd Annual Antique Rug and Textile Show from October 12-17 at the Motel Capri in San Francisco's Marina District. Mark your calendars!
