New Titles for May 2010

Happy May! Despite a cancelled show or two we are excited about the upcoming several months in the Tribal arts and Oriental rug world. The 2nd San Francisco Antique Rug and Textile Show is being planned for October and Jozan has just published a press release about the 12th International Conference on Oriental Carpets to be held in June 2011 in Stockholm. For those in Southern California it was a delight to see many fine and wonderful examples from from David and Elizabeth Reisbord's collection at the Craft and Folk Art Museum exhibition Bold Abstractions: Textiles from Central Asia & Iran which ends May 9. If you are in London the KARMA (Kensington Antique Rug Mercantile Association) Fair from June 4 to June 7 is the place to be.

Drawing on the rich weaving traditions of the Near East and Central Asia, the clearly presented text is divided into six major regional and tribal groupings, covering Anatolian, Baluchi, Caucasian, Kurdish, Persian and Turkmen motifs. These are further subdivided into more precise attributions and motif types, examining the derivations and uses of medallions, field repeats and borders and the relationships between them. Pattern recognition has long been used to determine the origin and age of rugs, and this detailed analysis of designs and their component elements provides a vital key to accurate attribution. Striking diagrams illustrate the way in which individual motifs may be adapted and reinterpreted over time, their evolution crossing historical, cultural and geographic boundaries. $70.
